My wife Lisa and I met at Bell Laboratories 30 years ago and that research background has been extremely helpful in dealing with the complexities of this disease. She jokes that she’s the world’s leading expert on ‘Stuff Tom Has’ and it’s true. She’s attended myeloma and hematological conferences and if there’s a clinical trial or a new drug for myeloma on the horizon, she has probably seen it. Our medical team here is fantastic and genuinely appreciates that we understand the available treatments and trade-offs as active participants in my care.

In January 2015 we flew to Maui to see how travel would work with my new normal. It went great and we started traveling the world again. A little slower, and opting more for comfort than we had before, but in that first remission we did road trips to Alaska and California, took multiple trips to London, and did bird watching and photography trips in Cuba, Sri Lanka, and the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.
I broke a few more bones when I relapsed in December 2016. I started on a Revlimid and Ninlaro treatment which put me back into remission. When the bones healed we were traveling again. This remission saw us in London (we like London) plus another road trip through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We traveled to Israel, Italy, and took a 14-day trip around Greenland.
