I’ve been athletic all my life. I took up Olympic weightlifting a few years ago and it’s a sport that a lot of people don't know about. They’ll confuse it with bodybuilding or powerlifting instead of actual competitive weightlifting. In 2017 when I was 60 years old I won the national championship for weight lifting in my age group and weight class. A couple of years later, I started noticing the issues that led to my myeloma diagnosis. While I was training, I began having back pains and I didn’t know what was wrong. The MRI found a mass on my spine and the biopsy showed it was myeloma. I went through the typical therapy for five months and in the middle of it, COVID hit. After my stem cell transplant in June, a bone marrow biopsy said I was MRD negative, so I’m in a good spot except for the pain I have in my back. I try to still work out a little bit. I've had a hard time and I can't do a lot of things that I used to be able to do, but I still have strength. Since my diagnosis and the whole COVID thing, my wife and I pretty much hang out at home with our dogs. I'm back to working full-time from home and I'm into beekeeping now as a hobby. I just try to stay positive and enjoy life.
