Ever since being diagnosed, I’ve wanted to do more for other people. As someone with myeloma, I like to do my part to aid in the search for a cure. For instance, I participate in the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation’s virtual athletic event called the Move for Myeloma Challenge. Starting in California, we are virtually going from one myeloma research consortium to another across the whole United States. Participants make a team and build up miles by tracking their running, walking, swimming, and more. My team is going from San Francisco to St. Louis. We are trying to get to 2,495 miles collectively in three months and during that time we’re raising money to help fund a cure. For me, working out helps me feel like I'm normal again. I started working out a lot more in the last year and I was chosen to be an ambassador for Orca Running, a race organization based out of Washington state. I help promote their races and I have a discount code* for people to get 10% off their virtual and in-person races. It feels good to be able to support myeloma efforts and small businesses through exercise. I try my best to put fitness and myeloma together. I may have this disease, but I can still get out and do something. Almost anybody with myeloma can at least swim if they know how because it's not a high-impact sport. Walking, even if it's a few short distances, will also add up. After my diagnosis, I got started by walking around my complex. It's not even a mile but by doing that I worked my way up to running. Even with myeloma, you can feel better and get stronger.
