I do like to help people and I try to be a cheerleader for others. I have always been a positive person with empathy for others but with age and my myeloma diagnosis, I find that I reach out more. I have other friends and family members who are going through cancer and I try to help them look at the glass as half-full instead of half-empty. Some people get caught up in asking “how did I get this, why did I get this, why me?” Instead, I say “I have this, I can’t change that, and I’ll move forward.” We have cancer, it sucks, but we also have modern medicine to help us through it. We are given extra days to live whereas if I were diagnosed 20 years ago, I wouldn’t be here right now. As a 60-year-old who was diagnosed with myeloma at 50, the likelihood of me being on the right side of dirt 10 years out from diagnosis would not have been great. We must be grateful for what we are given. In so many ways I find cancer as a blessing, you just have to have the right attitude to make it so.
