In July of 2017, I was diagnosed with myeloma. A few months before that I started to feel aches in my back and I noticed that my golf performance wasn’t as good, among other things. After some blood tests, my doctor told me I needed to see an oncologist. That’s where it all began. With some initial treatment, I was healthy enough to do a stem cell transplant even though I was 68 at the time. It really affected me physically and limited my routine of getting up in the morning to do yoga and walk the golf course. As time wore on, I started to get neuropathy in my hands and legs. The doctors told me I couldn’t stand on my head anymore and I had to cut back on my yoga. I continued to lift weights throughout treatment and once I was cleared to play golf I was out there again even though I could barely swing the club. That first year was kind of rough but I got through it okay and just continued to get stronger and stronger. Now I play golf about five times a week and I got back into my yoga. I’m back up to about three minutes of standing on my head. Things are getting better. Back when I was really hitting the bottom I decided to choose life by making myself as strong as I can so I can last as long as possible and enjoy as much as I can. It doesn’t have to be so bad, it is as good as you want to make it. I truly believe that.
